Dr. Santo studied at the State University of Tirana, Albania where he earned an MD and a PhD in the 1970s to 1990s. His vast experience and exceptional training have led to numerous leadership positions, including service as the chairperson of the Pathology Department at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2004 to 2022 and a similar position with the Medical College of the State University of Tirana, Albania. Dr. Santo has also served as a pathology professor.
Dedicated to providing the latest advancements in his field, the doctor is a member of several organizations, including the International Academy of Pathology and the Medical Society of Virginia. Dr. Santo considers earning the Golden Apple Award as a career highlight as well as the contribution of more than 60 publications, including articles, textbooks, and monographs.
A professional milestone, Dr. Santo takes great pride in creating 190 chapters of a pathology textbook, which significantly helped his students pass their board exam. According to the doctor, each year the students’ scores in pathology were between 30 and 40 points above the national average. He credits his overall success to a law in Albania that made the autopsy of patients who died in the hospital mandatory, which allowed him to further his knowledge via the postmortem dissection of 1,500 people.
Looking towards the future, Dr. Santo plans to continue his research and service to the field. He would like to dedicate this honor with special thanks to his wife, Alida Santo, with whom he has been married for 45 years.
