Dania Beach, FL – Patricia A. Tyra, EdD, MS, BS, is being recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Lifetime Achiever in the field of Nursing as a Mental Health Nurse Professor Emeritas with the University of Massachusetts & Island Counseling Services of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.
Located north of Boston, UMass Lowell is a research university that has provided sterling educational services for 125 years. During Dr. Tyra’s employment, she was influential as an educator and researcher. In addition to her teaching career at UMass, she held academic appointments at the University of Lowell, Boston State College, and in the graduate school of nursing at Boston University.
Patricia Tyra has been in the field of education and mental health services for 52 years. She first started in 1963 and has since led an impressive career. Early in her career, she volunteered as a rape crisis counselor. From 1977 to 1996, she offered consultation and therapy services at a private practice. In-between these years, she also served as a clinic director at the Human Resource Institute. Most recently, she worked as an emergency clinician at Martha’s Vineyards Community Services from 2003 to 2015.
Before her career, Dr. Tyra earned a Bachelor of Science from Boston University School of Nursing from1959-1963. She continued her education and earned a Certificate with the University of Oslo, Public Health Summit in 1963. Dr. Tyra went on to earn a Masters in Science from Boston University School of Nursing 1966-1967. For her academic success, Dr. Tyra was invited for a Fellowship with the Harvard Medical School Laboratory of Community Psychiatry from 1972-1973. Following her Fellowship with Harvard, Dr. Tyra earned her Doctor of Education Designation with the University School of Education in Counseling and psychology from 1977-1979.
Remaining abreast of the latest developments, Dr. Tyra is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, and the Cambridge Boat Club. She also volunteers her time with the Edgartown Council on Aging, Dania Beach BSO Citizens Observer Patrol.
In recognition of honors and awards, Dr. Tyra received a Research Award and a Trustee Metal and was appointed Professor Emeritas upon retirement from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her goals during retirement are to remain active physically and mentally and continue to volunteer.
In her free time, Dr. Tyra enjoys rowing (3rd place 1971 NWRA Championship regatta & 2 medals MV Oak & Paddle Regatta), biking, and swimming. She is retired as US Rowing Assoc Judge/Referee and won Skillet Toss ribbons at the MV Agricultural Society Fair. She also enjoys spending time with her brother Gordon Tyra and his wife Ann, and daughter Robin Bauld and her granddaughter Caitlin Bauld.
