Steven J. Barker, Ph.D., MD, has built a distinguished career at the intersection of engineering and medicine, bringing a rare and influential perspective to patient safety and medical innovation. His professional journey reflects a lifelong commitment to applying scientific rigor and engineering principles to improve healthcare outcomes.
Dr. Barker began his career as a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he developed a strong foundation in complex systems and precision driven problem solving. His growing interest in patient safety and biomedical applications led him to pursue medicine as a second career, a decision that would define his lasting impact on healthcare technology.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Harvey Mudd College, followed by a Master of Science in engineering science and a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering from the California Institute of Technology. He later obtained his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of California University Hospital at San Diego. Dr. Barker is board certified in anesthesiology.
Dr. Barker’s unique background has been instrumental in his work with Masimo Corporation, where he serves as chief science officer. In this role, he applies advanced engineering concepts to the development of medical technologies designed to enhance monitoring accuracy, improve clinical decision making, and elevate patient safety standards worldwide.
Throughout his career, Dr. Barker has been deeply engaged in advancing patient safety initiatives on a national and global level. He is affiliated with the American Society of Anesthesiology and has been featured in its professional publications. His leadership roles include service with the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the Patient Safety Movement Foundation where he serves as chief safety officer and board member, the Foundation for Anesthesiology Education and Research, and the Society for Technology in Anesthesia, which he founded and previously led as president and continues to support as a board member.
In addition to his industry leadership, Dr. Barker has worked extensively with the Veterans Administration, serving at four VA hospitals and contributing to improved standards of care for veterans. His scholarly contributions include the publication of more than 200 peer reviewed papers focused on anesthesiology, patient safety, and medical technology.
Dr. Barker credits mentors such as Kevin Trempa and Joseph Kiani for their guidance and collaboration throughout his career.
