Gary Sprouse, MD, has built a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades in internal medicine, addiction medicine, and medical education, earning recognition for his innovative approach to stress management and addiction recovery. Now retired from private practice, Dr. Sprouse continues to educate healthcare professionals, organizations, and the public through writing, speaking engagements, and his groundbreaking work on the relationship between stress and addictive behaviors.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sprouse provided comprehensive internal medicine care while developing specialized expertise in addiction treatment, behavioral health, pain management, geriatric medicine, rehabilitation medicine, Department of Transportation physical examinations, and hypnosis-based clinical support. His work has focused on helping patients achieve lasting recovery by addressing the underlying causes of addiction rather than simply treating its symptoms.

Dr. Sprouse earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from George Washington University in 1978 before receiving his Doctor of Medicine from the George Washington University School of Medicine in 1982. Graduating in the top 10 percent of his class, he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at George Washington University Hospital in 1985 and went on to earn board certification in Internal Medicine, along with certifications as a Medical Director, Suboxone provider, Department of Transportation medical examiner, and hypnosis practitioner.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Sprouse served in private practice throughout Maryland from 1985 until 2023 while also holding leadership positions as Medical Director and attending physician for rehabilitation and assisted living facilities. Since 2004, he has served as President of the Queen Anne’s Medical Society, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to advancing the medical profession and supporting fellow physicians.

Among his most significant contributions is the development of the Stress Reducer Loop model, an innovative framework that reframes addictive substances as stress relievers that perpetuate a self-sustaining cycle of addiction. Through this evidence-based model, Dr. Sprouse teaches patients and healthcare professionals how adapting to environmental stressors and developing healthier coping mechanisms can interrupt the addiction cycle and support long-term recovery. Today, he delivers seminars and workplace programs focused on stress reduction, physician burnout prevention, and behavioral health.

An accomplished author and medical communicator, Dr. Sprouse published Highway to Your Happy Place: A Road Map to Less Stress in 2023, followed by his coauthored book Mindset Matters in 2024. His research and educational articles have appeared in professional publications including Cardiology Journal, Indian Management Magazine, and iPain Living Magazine. He also developed the research poster Stress Reducer Loops: A New Model to Describe Addiction and serves as host of the Happiness Highway podcast.

His work has earned numerous honors, including the Gold Medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards, First Place in the National Indie Excellence Awards, the Gold Goody Business Book Award, Silver and Bronze Stevie Awards, the Eric Hoffer Honorable Mention, the New York Book Festival Honorable Mention, the Visible Voice Expy for the Happiness Highway podcast, the Quilly Award, and recognition as a Fellow of the American Institute of Stress in 2025.

Outside of his professional activities, Dr. Sprouse enjoys serving as an assistant wrestling coach for a local high school team, where he continues mentoring young people and promoting resilience both on and off the mat.
