Devon G. John — Transplant Surgeon and Chief of Renal Transplantation

Dr. John began his pursuit of higher education at the prestigious Princeton University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He then attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine where he received his medical degree. He completed a residency in general surgery at the SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn; became a Transplant Fellow at New York University Medical Center; and a Surgical Research Fellow at The State University of New York.

Currently serving as the Chief of Renal Transplantation at Westchester Medical Center (WMC), Dr. John is a renowned transplant surgeon who asserts that WMC is the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) and is a 415-bed academic hospital. He explained that WMC is one of three hospitals located on the Networks Westchester County New York campus. Founded in 1917, it is the regional base of tertiary; quaternary care; and is the primary referral facility for other hospitals serving as a lifeline for millions of people in the Hudson Valley.

Board-certified in general and transplant surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS), Dr. John asserts that the ABS is an independent non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education training and knowledge. The surgeon previously served as the Interim Chair of Surgery and the Chief of Transplantation at The State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.

Dr. John explained that transplant surgery is where an organ in the body is replaced with an organ from a donor. A transplant surgeon is a surgeon who performs organ transplants, which may include kidneys; livers; hearts; lungs; the pancreas; the intestine (especially the small intestine); and recently, faces; tracheal (windpipe) tissue; and penises.

Recognized for his exceptional education, training, and abilities, Dr. John has had a plethora of awards and recognitions during his extraordinary career, including Schneps Media Award in 2019; being recognized as a Top Doctor in the New York Metro Area by the digital guide every year from 2018 to 2022; and Top Doctor by Westchester Magazine from 2020 to 2022 and New York Magazine in 2021 and 2022.

In his current position since 2019, Dr. John credits his successful career to his mentors John Bonner Ph.D., and Bruce Sommer, MD. Aside from his professional pursuits, Dr. John participates in medical mission work to Haiti and Jamaica with the LJDR Davis Foundation and Medinova.
