Dr. Kinney earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Art from Birmingham-Southern College and served in the US Navy for 4 years. He is a Vietnam Era Veteran and left the service with the rank of Petty Officer 2nd class. He later earned a Ph.D. in Anatomy, emphasizing Neuroanatomy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After teaching for 5 years, the doctor completed his MD at the University of Alabama, School of Medicine. He completed a residency in psychiatry at University Hospital in Birmingham and a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Alabama, School of Medicine. The doctor is board certified in general psychiatry.
Working in this position for 33 years and in the field for 47 years, Dr. Kinney specializes in geriatrics and is a senior scientist at both the Comprehensive Neuroscience Center and the General Clinical Research Center. Board-certified in Psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), the doctor explained that the ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology. Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis prevention and treatment of mental disorders. These include various mal-adaptations related to mood behavior cognition and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate diagnose and treat patients with mental emotional and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations develop treatment plans prescribe medication and evaluate treatment results.
A leader in his field, the doctor has received many accolades during his career, including the Top Doctors in America and in 2018, earned the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association. Dr. Kinney has also been chosen for a number of honors including the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill; several Argus Society Awards for Excellence in Teaching; and Outstanding Faculty Teacher by the UAB Psychiatry Residents Association.
Dedicated to providing the latest advancements in his field, the doctor is associated with the American Psychiatric Association; American College of Psychiatrists; Alabama State Medical Association; and is past president and member of the Jefferson County Medical Society. The doctor was a member of the Jefferson County Board of Health from 2007-2012 and served as chairman in 2010. He also served on the Board of the Jefferson County Medical Society from 2007-2016 and as Society president in 2015.
Dr. Kinney has received many career accolades, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association (2018); Distinguished Alumnus Award from Birmingham-Southern College (2009); and F. Cleveland Kinney Chair in Psychiatry at the University of Alabama established by Winton Blount.

Crosby, Ph.D. Aside from his professional pursuits, the doctor serves on the Board of Directors for Upper Birmingham (philanthropic) and is a Trustee for the Birmingham Historical Society.
