Lorraine M. Lazar, MD, Ph.D., has dedicated more than 26 years to improving the lives of children with neurological disorders, earning recognition as a leader in pediatric neurology and epilepsy care. Through her expertise in advanced diagnostics, compassionate patient care, and medical education, she continues to help children and their families navigate complex neurological conditions with confidence and hope.
As Program Director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and a key member of the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group, Dr. Lazar specializes in the evaluation and treatment of pediatric epilepsy and other neurological disorders. She provides comprehensive care for children with seizures, including medication management, advanced diagnostic evaluations, and assessment for epilepsy surgery when appropriate. Her expertise also includes inpatient child neurology consultations, clinical neurophysiology, and the management of drug resistant epilepsy. She is widely recognized for her ability to explain complex medical conditions in clear, compassionate language, empowering families to make informed decisions about their child’s care.
Dr. Lazar earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania before completing both her Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Neurobiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She completed her internship in pediatrics at New York Hospital Cornell University Medical Center, followed by residencies in neurology and child neurology at New York Hospital Cornell University Medical Center and senior pediatrics at Columbia University Medical Center. She then completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at New York Hospital Cornell University Medical Center. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology.
Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Lazar has combined exceptional patient care with a commitment to advancing medical education. She regularly teaches pediatric neurology fellows, neurology residents, and pediatric residents while presenting lectures and grand rounds on pediatric epilepsy and neurological disorders. In addition to contributing a chapter to a pediatric textbook, she has played an instrumental role in addressing the regional shortage of pediatric epileptologists through her work with the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group. She also maintains hospital affiliations with Atlantic Health, Hackensack University Medical Center, and University Hospital in Newark.
Her professional accomplishments have been recognized through her election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and her selection as one of New Jersey’s Top Doctors for multiple years.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Dr. Lazar enjoys hiking and practicing Tae Kwon Do. She credits the guidance of Dr. Jerome Posner and fondly remembers the lasting influence of Dr. Fred Plum, Dr. Cynthia Harden, and Dr. Douglas Labar on her professional development.
Looking ahead, Dr. Lazar is leading efforts to elevate the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center from a Level 3 to a Level 4 epilepsy center, expanding access to the highest level of specialized pediatric epilepsy care. Guided by a philosophy of compassionate, individualized treatment, she remains committed to combining advanced diagnostics with patient and family education to identify the most effective treatment for every child and improve outcomes for children living with epilepsy.
