Stephen Gordy, affectionately known by his pen name Steve the Writer, has transformed a long career in technical writing and education into a vibrant life as a published author. With a storytelling voice rooted in the American South and a deep well of spiritual and emotional insight, Mr. Gordy is known for crafting fiction that is both compelling and soul-searching.
A longtime educator and technical writer in the electric utility, chemical, nonprofit, and academic sectors, Mr. Gordy shifted gears in 2003 to focus on writing what was in his heart. His breakthrough novel Faith, Hope and Dr. Vangelis (2019), which draws inspiration from personal experiences with hospice care in his family, earned wide acclaim and was recently optioned for potential film adaptation. The book follows a mystical and emotional journey through death and faith, anchored by its title character, Dr. Lukas Vangelis—a spiritual guide for the dying.
Currently, Mr. Gordy is working on a new novel tentatively titled Town Behind the Veil, a Southern Gothic tale set in a small, corruption-plagued town. With a writing style reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor, this next book continues his tradition of capturing the strange, sacred, and sublime elements of Southern life.
A native and current resident of the South, Mr. Gordy is a member of the South Carolina Writers Association and remains actively engaged in both the literary community and his Episcopal Church, which he considers a vital source of connection, sustenance, and non-judgmental support. Alongside his wife of 46 years, Ruth Lea Gordy, he is deeply involved in church life and credits their shared faith as a foundation for his writing and worldview.
