Zackary O. Byrd, MD, has established himself as a respected leader in orthopedic surgery, earning recognition for his expertise in adult hip and knee reconstruction and his unwavering commitment to patient centered care. As a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, he combines advanced surgical techniques with a thoughtful approach, ensuring that every patient feels heard, understood, and empowered throughout their treatment journey.
Dr. Byrd specializes in the replacement and reconstruction of hip and knee joints, the evaluation and management of problematic total joint replacements, and comprehensive guidance through both surgical and nonsurgical treatment options. His approach emphasizes individualized care designed to restore mobility, relieve pain, and improve quality of life while developing lasting relationships founded on trust and communication.
Dr. Byrd earned a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology from Kent State University before receiving his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toledo College of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, McGovern Medical School in 2018. He subsequently completed his fellowship in Adult Reconstruction of the Hip and Knee at UTHealth McGovern Medical School before entering practice in 2019. As a member of the program’s first graduating class of fellows, he contributed to the continued growth and development of its specialized joint reconstruction training.
Throughout his career, Dr. Byrd has provided comprehensive orthopedic care for patients requiring joint replacement and reconstruction while building a reputation for clinical excellence and attentive, individualized treatment. He has also participated in medical and surgical mission work, reflecting his commitment to extending quality healthcare to underserved communities.
His dedication to medicine and leadership has earned numerous professional honors. Dr. Byrd is the only individual to have received the Arthur M. Jansa Courage to Lead Award in consecutive years, earning the distinction in both 2017 and 2018. His additional recognition includes the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Award, the Arthritis Foundation Pioneer in Medicine Award, and multiple honors recognizing his exceptional bedside manner and dedication to patient care.
Dr. Byrd remains actively involved in the orthopedic community as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Throughout his professional and personal journey, he has benefited from the guidance, encouragement, and support of mentors, colleagues, and family members who have contributed to his development as both a physician and leader. He is especially grateful for the continued support of his wife, Annie Kirkpatrick, and their family. Together, they have two children.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Byrd enjoys automobile racing in the Great Lakes Region and is involved with the National Auto Sport Association.
