Amy Hecht, Ph.D.

Touting a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Gallaudet University with clinical psychology training at Howard University, Dr. Hecht is considered an expert in family and couples’ therapy; Ketamine-assisted co-joint psychotherapy; adoption counseling; evaluations for visa applications; LGBTQ+ counseling. She has nearly 20 years of experience in private practice. She prepared for her career with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Performing Arts (Theatre) with a minor in Anthropology at Adelphi University in 1987. She pursued a Master of Fine Arts in Performing Arts (Stage Direction) at the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1990 followed by a Master’s in Psychology at City College of New York in 1995. She also completed a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at Gallaudet University in 1998.

Dr. Hecht has extensive clinical experience including her current position as clinical director and licensed psychologist at Hecht Ribas Group for Psychology where her areas of interest include deafness/hard of hearing issues; adoption; families; couples; individual psychotherapy; disability; and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues. She served as a clinical supervisor and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York; clinical psychologist in the Mental Health Services Department at the League for the Hard of Hearing; and completed a clinical internship at Pace University Counseling Center. Her training includes multiple clinical externships at Howard University Counseling Center focused on individual and group psychodynamic psychotherapy; District of Columbia Superior Court Family Services Branch; and postgraduate West Rehabilitation Center in New York.

Dr. Hecht’s illustrious career was also punctuated with experiences as a facilitator for the Culture and Language Colloquium at Gallaudet University Graduate School; and a clinical interviewer at New York State Psychiatric Institute. She has more than a dozen professional presentations and has specialized training in adoption and family from numerous post doctoral conferences. Her professional research spans multiple topics including the analysis of the relationship between self-esteem, identity labels, and socialization patterns in D/deaf Lesbians; Coding Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) responses for a Measure of Defense Mechanisms in Gay and Heterosexual Men; and a project on the Effects of Physical Abuse on Children’s Social Relationships. She also has an interest in Authority, Leadership, and Participation in Group and Organizational Life in a Rapidly Changing World.

The doctor is affiliated with numerous professional organizations including the A.K. The doctor has been recognized for her outstanding career with many accolades including Women in Medicine: Top Psychologists 2024; Continental Who’s Who 2024; NortCentral University School of Psychology Certificate of Appreciation for Academic Commitment to Excellence in 2010; The Bernard N. Aside from her professional pursuits, Dr. Hecht and her wife are the parents to five children.
