Joshua M. Smith, MD – Physiatrist

Dr. Joshua M. Smith, a dedicated physiatrist at Brown University Health, provides comprehensive care to patients with a wide range of diagnoses, including osteoarthritis, stroke, spinal cord injuries, spasticity, and various musculoskeletal issues, including specialty in ultrasound guided procedures. Dr. Smith also performs EMG/NCS to evaluate large fiber peripheral neuropathies, plexopathies, and radiculopathies. As a physiatrist, he is trained in a comprehensive approach to patient management, which focuses on utilizing a holistic view to improve patient function.

Dr. Smith earned his Bachelor of Science in Integrative Neuroscience from Binghamton University before obtaining his Doctor of Medicine from Albany Medical College. He completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident. He is currently affiliated with Rhode Island Hospital, Newport Hospital, and The Miriam Hospital. He is an active member of the Association of Academic Physiatrists and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

“Doctor” comes from the Latin word for “teacher”. Dr. Smith grounds his practice in teaching and guiding patients through their health concerns. He has an empathetic and non-judgmental approach to help patients navigate health issues, and collaborates to develop a treatment plan customized to patients’ with a focus in enhancing functionality. Dr. Smith’s dedication to his field is deeply rooted, and he honors his father’s memory, Howard Steven Smith, MD, who inspired his compassionate approach to care.
